In this blog entry, I'm looking into the perspective of a Fresh graduate or College students (by popular demand). What car can you buy these days with RM20,000. 1. Wow, Fiat Punto 1.3 ELX 16v Speedgear! I didn't expect to see that car there. I used to drive that, it was my mum's previous car. The depreciation is seriously bad though...

It's a GREAT car to drive, but personally I won't recommend it to students in a tight budget. The maintenance of the car is definitely more expensive and spare parts are very hard to find. Getting a local car will be a safer option.

  2. Not really if you are an "ITALIAAUTO" club member. I don't own fiat nor alfa but I'm Italiaauto member. FIAT Punto owner there are well taken care of. They'll show you the BEST yet affordable workshops and taught you how to maintain your Fiat/Alfa (eg. replace water pump every 60,000km. AND HELP YOU to Source affordable spare parts.

  7. ammar, There are many reasons why I highly recommend Mazda Lantis Hatchback.

    1) The frameless doors (hardtop)
    2) Still looks good after 13 years (1994 design). In fact, still a "HEAD TURNER".

    3) Endless Mod options. Eg.KF-ZE 2.0V6 transplant, Eibach suspension/anti-roll kit etc, ECU can be tuned, lots of "MazdaSpeed" mod options... Also, lots of "Chop shops" carry spare parts for this car.

    4)Good resale value for a Mazda (a 1996 - 13 yrs old unit still RM18,000 +/-).
    5) Fuel economical (esp. the Manual version)
6)4 disc brakes + ABS Standard

    7) Hi-Tech Independent MacPherson Front and Independent Multi-link rear suspension + front and rear anti-roll bars, hence great ride & handling.

8)Do check out my FULL Review:

  9. ammar, if you want Economical, good resale value and good looking...

    I recommend:

    1) Toyota Corolla SEG (AT) 1994-95 AE101. Best looking COROLLA. That car's still in Demand. A good cond used unit still fetch AT LEAST RM21,000 and goes up to RM26,000. Not only that, it's powerful as well: top speed 194km/h. 0-100km/h in 10.9 seconds (according to Highway Malaysia November 1994 issue). It's good for 11.4km/L (33mpg).

    2) Honda City 1.5EXI(A). 1998. Also economical. good resale value. But looks a bit dull...

    3) For new economical car, Perodua Viva but at RM41k, it's a bit costly for a 1.0 3 cyl car.

it has been more than 2 years since you write up this excellent post. i am sure most of used car price has gone down a bit and what do you think the most recommended car for 20k budget now?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Simple... For most cars, just add 2 years. Eg. Corolla SEG you can get a 1994 instead of 92 ones, same goes to Lantis, 99 instead of 97 ones. For Kancil 660 case, you can now get a used VIVA 660 for RM20k.

For Cars like Citroen Xsara, Mazda 626 V6 and Peugeot 306, 2 years newer = IMPOSSIBLE TO BUY coz they stopped production in 2002, 1996 and 2000 respectively.

So my top 5 FAVOURITES (NOT in preference order):

    1) Mazda Lantis Hatchback(1999)
    2) Corolla SEG (1994)
    3) Honda Civic EG (1994)
    4) Ford Telstar 2000 (last batch)
    5) Perodua Kelisa 2002(NEW ENTRY)
