LONGTERMER 2: 125th month report: Honda Civic FD2 2.0iS

LONGTERMER 2: 10th year and 5 months report: Honda Civic FD2 (Season 2, vol 4)

In this blog entry, I'm posting my Family's ride.  The Honda Civic FD
2 2.0 IVTEC.  I called it Season 2 volume 4 because I haven't been updating it for
1 year and 5 months.  This is the 125th month we owned the Honda Civic FD2 2.0I-S.

Update: 29 December 2018.  The Engine mounting, Compressor and Rear Double wishbones still factory fitted.  Though the Compressor showing signs of failure, intermittently blowing hot air.  How to take care of compressor (dad's tips):

1) Change your cabin filter every 20,000km
2) don't full blast the air cond, don't use Auto air-cond.  Dad's fave temperature 25 deg. Celsius at 1/3 fan speed.
3) Don't on the aircond for 1st 2km (Also off air-cond before ignition off)
4) When driving to Genting (uphill) off the air cond.  Blower only.

The reason why it hasn't been updated for 17 months is because there's very little things to write about.  Apparently, this is a Very Reliable car.

My Colleague was surprised to learned that the Engine mountings and Rear Double Wishbones Suspensions are still Factory Fitted.

His 5 years Old Elantra 1.6 already changed 1 set Engine Mountings and 1 set absorbers.  We stopped servicing with Honda on the 6th year owning the Civic.  Anyway for your reference, maintenance cost of the Civic FD2 without Hidden wear and tear stuff like Rear Wheel bearing, Absorbers, Brake pads.

Nothing much to update.  Firstly, The Good news.   Last year, I walked to Kah Motor CSL's just across the road to submit quotation.  Lo and behold, No LOADING.  Also, NO Betterment, use ORIGINAL parts, No Excess, 200km radius towing.  Agreed Value clause...  This package by MSIG is called HONDA INSURANCE PACKAGE.

Click the link below for more information:

Basically last year was the FINAL YEAR I get to enjoy HIP (Honda Insurance Package).  Thank God!  This year,  I decided to go 1 Up.  Bypass Kah Motor and renew Direct from MSIG Insurance.  I still don't get loading.  And I got 10% Discount!

The Civic FD have 1 oil change using Castrol magnatec and Original Honda Oil filter, 1 Brake fluid Change apart from Annual Road tax and Insurance renewal.  Very reliable and low maintenance car.

Above: 450 litres boot space with 60:40 split folding rear seats (Below).

This is the Only Generation Civic in Malaysia with 60:40 split fold rear seats.  The latest Civic FC have 60:40 split rear seats BUT in USA, Indonesia and Australia only.

Over the past 17 months, the Civic Clocked 9,858 only or 580km per month only.  It's rarely used as My dad, was working Oversea 1/2 of the year.  And I've been driving my Hyundai i10 daily.  RECENTLY, past 6 months, dad came back more often, hence using the Civic More frequent. 1 Penang drive, 2-3 outstation drive and Occasional Genting run.

Minor trim wear and tear as below:

My opinion on this Honda Civic FD2 2.0S IVTEC:

The 8th generation Civic FD's the last Civic With Double wishbones suspension, only Civic with 60:40 split fold rear seat back and the Most stylish Civic inside out. This is the Best Civic.  Apparently, Malaysians agree with me as reflected by it's Strong Resale Value. First batch 2006 Civic FD are still selling at RM36,000 to RM42,000 depending on conditions. That's Mind boggling for a 12 years old Car.  An astounding 52% retained value in 8 years and 40% retained value in 10 years.   This is the reason why my dad's Keeping the Civic for another few years.

SHOULD YOU BUY A USED CIVIC FD?

Why not?
Honda Civic in General are Extremely tough cars.  The 1st 3-generations are victim to Rust only. Many Civic from the 4th generation EF onwards (1987 to 1991) are still running on Malaysian roads.  The 4th-Generation's where Rust-proofing extensively applied by Kah Motor.  There are Still many 5th and 6th generation on the road which are between 16 to 24 years old yet the EG (Dolphin) and EK (Taai Ngan Chai) still Desired by Ah Bengs.  Average lifespan of a Civic unless Total-loss or stolen are 20 years!!!  So say you bought a used 2008 model, on average the Civic FD can last you another 10-12 years.

Above: Note still Stock Standard 6-disc In-dash CD/MP3/WMA CD-Changer Head unit with Aux and Volume adjust according to Speed or Noise.  Eg. The higher the speed or engine noise, the higher the volume.  Also, Steering wheel Audio control.

Without further ado, let's proceed to Logbook.

The top 40 best Vehicles Resale value (updated 18/12/2018)

PRESENTING: The top 40 best Vehicles Resale value (updated 18/12/2018)

NOTE 18/12/18: This is Private sale price.  This DOES NOT factor Trade in price.  For trade in price less 10% to 20% depending on car as used car dealers also need to make money.

Don't be fooled by Mudah or Carlist Used car dealer lowish price.  Eg. They advertised RM50,000 for a 2015 Elantra.  But, in reality, the car's 2014 YM (declared 1 year newer), need to add RM3800 "football money" (typically) + insurance.  So on a save side Prepare at least 5k-6k on top of advertised fee.  If you want to avoid this, try buy from Direct buyer.

I NOW PRESENT my research on used car retained value after few years. It took me 3 months to gather and compile the used car prices from various sources of classifieds namely Motortrader, The Star Classifieds, Carlist, and random visits to car dealerships/Recond car showrooms…

Here are the vehicles shown with their Retained value in PERCENTAGE (%) within 3 years… (and 5 years/7 years in bracket). This is for Local (eg. Tan Chong) AND/OR Official Distributors (eg. Mercedes Benz Malaysia (MBM)) cars only. AP Imports to be covered later as their New car price were determined by AP Importer themselves, Ie. It varies, so I just estimated their new price to make this statistic possible, it’ll be unfair if I mix REAL results and estimated results together.

NEW for 2018.  7 years depreciation / retained value.

NOTE: Overall Peugeot, Hybrids, VW and Proton experienced dropped in their resale value.

Hybrids because fear of Battery replacement and reliability concerns.  And dragged down by Used car dealers.  They "scare" hybrid owners to trading in for say RM30,000 but resell at much higher price.

Peugeot and VW's because of their Poor after-sales and perceived Mechanical Issues.

Also, due to demands by Grab Drivers and proven reliability, Hyundai Starex  Resale value improved by 5-10% depending on Specs.

Biggest winners are Honda.  All Honda models have improvements in their Resale Value.

In fact, Honda Civic FD2R Type-R hardly depreciates.  7 years still holds 75% retained value.

2) Hyundai Starex, Toyota Avanza, Perodua Alza, Nissan Almera, Toyota Vios and Proton Exora
Huge improvement in RV due to GRAB drivers demand.

AP/Grey Imports (TOP 10 best resale value vehicles):

Again, I can’t determined the Actual new car prices of these cars as it’s Determined by the AP Holders/Grey importers. But I found that it’s safe to say for example Toyota Alphard 2.4’s New car price: RM280,000 with 5% +/- allowance depending on specs (ie. RM266k to RM294k), hence I used this as my estimation to come up with the percentage (%) of retained value results in 3 years (5 years in brackets).

1) Mini Cooper/S/Clubman/Countryman 75%/65/55%
1) Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ   75%/(65%/-NA-)
3) Honda Odyssey/Stream (recond) 70% (65%/55%)

10) Toyota Alphard 63% (59% for recond 5 yrs old)/47% (for used 7 years old)

THAT’S ALL FOLKS! Hope this STATISTICS will be helpful for you in shopping for your ideal used cars… Again, it took me 3 months to come up with these statistics… You should thank me for it…

LONGTERMER 2: 9th year report: Honda Civic FD2 (Season 2, vol 3)

In this blog entry, I'm posting my Family's ride.  The Honda Civic FD2 2.0 IVTEC.  I called it Season 2 volume 3 because I haven't been updating it since July 29 2016.  This is the 9th year or 108th month we owned the Honda Civic FD2 2.0I-S.

The reason why it hasn't been updated for 12 months is because there's very little things to write about.  Apparently, this is a Very Reliable car.

My cousin was surprised to learned that the Engine mountings and Rear Double Wishbones Suspensions are still Factory Fitted.

His 3 years Old Proton already changed 1 set Engine Mountings and 1 set absorbers.

Last year, Allianz Insurance gave us 10% loading on premium.  This year, My company's Insurance only have Tune insurance WITH NO LOADING but got Betterment and only ONCE towing.

As Kah Motor CSL's just across the road, I decided to walked to submit quotation.  Lo and behold, No LOADING.  Also, NO Betterment, use ORIGINAL parts, No Excess, 200km radius towing.  Agreed Value clause...  This package by MSIG is called HONDA INSURANCE PACKAGE.

Click the link below for more information:

Basically this is the FINAL YEAR I get to enjoy HIP (Honda Insurance Package).  Thank God!

The Civic FD have 2 oil change using Castrol magnatac and Original Honda Oil filter, 1 ATF Change and 1 driver side power window change apart from Annual Road tax and Insurance renewal.

Over the past year, the Civic Clocked 9500km only.  It's rarely used as My dad, was working Oversea 1/2 of the year.  And I've been driving my Hyundai i10 daily.  The Civic thus, relegated to Tuesday night (fetching people to Church) and Sunday car.  You see, i10's a Cute and Friendly car.   This Civic On the other hand's Stressful and always kena Bully.  How?

1) People deliberately Not give way despite giving signal.  Close gap on purpose.  The i10 from far people gave way already.
2) People challenge you for a Race.  Especially Vios, Elantra, Myvi, Civic FB, Modified Wira.
3) Bumper to bumper crawl, Civic kena picked on.  The i10 people give way.
4) Low slung seating position than i10 makes me insecure and more blind spots.  Stressful.

First batch 2006 Civic FD are still selling at RM40,000 to RM46,000 depending on conditions. That's Mind boggling for a 10 years old Car.  An astounding 52% retained value in 8 years and 40% retained value in 10 years.   This is the reason why my dad's Keeping the Civic for another few years.

MEGA REVIEW: Honda BR-V Crossover

In this blog entry, I'm reviewing the NEW Honda BR-V Crossover.   I'll kick off with my own words review, Launching Photos, YOUTUBE Playlists and reviews and Brochure scans...

End of source.

My (Jefferson Lim) test drive experience.

I only have 5km test drive.  But it's a good mix of routes (Except Uphill).  During the 5km drive, I noticed a commendable NVH and Just right amount of damping.  Soundproofing's MUCH MUCH better than Thai spec (which my relative tested in Hatyai).

It's Quite nippy too...  AS Powerful as Honda City with 4 on board.  We hit 110km/h briefly at that speed, RPM only hovering at 2200rpm.  Due to the 201mm high ground clearence, driving over speed-breakers and potholes were a breeze.   I also noticed the theatre like Seating positions.

This is where the 2nd row's slightly higher than 1st row (to accomodate the Fuel tank) and 3rd row higher than 2nd row (to fit the rear suspension and spare tyre - photo below).

Another welcome addition's the Ceiling mounted Rear Air-cond vents with individual compressor.

As for the seats, the 1st row and 2nd row were quite comfortable and came with high quality FULL leather seats (in the test car).  As for the 3rd row, unfortunately, it's Thinly padded (but still comfortable in terms of Head and legroom - I am 175cm tall).
 Above and below: 3rd row.

 Above and below: 2nd row.

Saving grace's the 2nd row can slide forward and 1 touch double-flip tumble down for easier 3rd row access.

Top speed was 170km/h according to a Thai Journalist while 0-100km/h in mid-12 seconds.  A check in Lowyat forum BR-V owner's club shows Mixed driving 13.9km/l.  Best 18km/h and worst 11km/l city driving.

Oh! Check out the Boot space with 3rd row seats up, a WHOOPING 223 litres.

Note this is AS Spacious as a Hyundai i10.  It rises to 539 litres

with 3rd row seats folded up (make sure you hook the seats to the 2nd row headrest bar, (see photo below) else the whole bench will Come tumbling down.

My only complaints were "Outside smell" such as Diesel fumes, durian stalls seeping into the cabin.  A check with Honda Indonesia and India revealed "NO Air-cond Cabin filter fitted".

2nd complaint are Exposed screws at door panels and boots and light-ish Door (compared to Honda City).  See photos below:

And lastly, no front armrest and a bit tight in 2nd row for 3 adults.  This is more to 6+1 seaters.

END OF MY Driving review...  Without further ado let's proceed to Youtube playlist...

END OF Youtube playlist...

Let's proceed to brochure and pricelist scan
