Happy10th Anniversary Otoreview.my!!!

Happy 10th Birthday Otoreview.blogspot.my

I Jeff Lim, owner and editor of this blog would like to thank all Readers/Subscribers for your support.  This blog turned 10 years old on 21 August 2016.  How time flies...  It seemed like yesterday I created this blog.  I created this blog on 21 August 2006.   This blog started off initially as a Malaysian Used car review blog.
My priceless 1st post back in 21 Aug 2006:
http://otoreview.blogspot.my/2006/08/full-review-ford-laser-tx3-b8.html

As time goes by, it slowly incorperates "Automotive Industry stuff", New car review, Highlighted Roadshows, Antique/Classic cars, Gadgets review, Product reviews, A little bit of Politics (NAP, AFTA, AP issues, Racism, Sexism), Best/worst resale values and lastly Advertorial (for Honda Malaysia and Nuffnang).

I, Jeff Lim shall keep this blog running hoping that there's Advertisers/Sponsors and "ASSISTANT EDITOR/S" as I have to admit it's DIFFICULT updating this blog ALONE.  I SHALL GIVE my assistant editors FULL POWER to post and edit (your own post) what he/she deemed fit.  BUT PLEASE Don't delete/edit my post.

I START FROM "0" back in 2006.  Hoping to be spotted/hired as a Car Writer/Journalists.  But I'm only an A-level holder.  I improved my English because I collect car magazines and been reading car magazines since I was 10 years old (1989).  My role model are "Shahriza Hussien", "LeePS", "Chips Yap", "Faisal Shah" and "Chris Wee".  I already built up my portfolio 1/3 of this blog were "Original Jeff Lim's production".

UPDATE: 25/8/16:  This blog just passed 2,000,000th Visitors...  I know it's CRAP for a 10 years blog but I'm contented with average 600-1000 visitors daily consistantly.

Thanks for your support...

Again, thanks everyone for your support...  Here's to the NEXT 10 years!

Jefferson's ALL TIME Favourite cars!

In this blog entry, I'd like to Answer this Burning question.  A lot of people around me often asked the following cars:

1) "What is your ALL TIME Favourite car/s?"
2) "What is your dream car?"

Well I'll answer question 1 and 2 now.

Question 1:

My ALL TIME top 3 favourite cars.

1) BMW F11 5-series touring

Especially 520d and 535d M-sport touring

Here's why:
http://otoreview.blogspot.com/2012/10/comprehensive-review-bmw-5-series.html

2) BMW F31 3-series touring.

Especially 320d Efficient dynamics and 335d.

3) Hyundai VF i40 2.0GDI Tourer Plus

As you can see, I'm a Estate/ Wagon and sunroof lover.  I rather buy Estate / wagon than Boxy, ugly MPV.

Only MPV I Like is the NEW Odyssey 2.4 Earth dreams EXV.

Question 2:
What is Your Dream car?

1 and only 1.  The Ultimate Acura NSX (Honda NSX in other parts of the world)

The NSX is SO GOOD that it SHOCKED the SUPERCAR world at it's launch back in 1990.  Back then, Supercars were Un-reliable (Ferrari and Lambo), temperamental (All Italian supercars), tail-happy (Porsche), not-user friendly (All Supercars) and uncomfortable (Lambo) to drive.   Ie. can't be daily driven.  This NSX is your EVERYDAY Supercar.

It's SO GOOD that Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini all used the NSX as benchmark for their Porsche 993, Ferrari 355 and Diablo respectively.

Why?
Read here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_NSX
 and here:
http://www.edmunds.com/acura/nsx/1991/long-term-road-test/introduction.html

Anyway, in my own words...  It's the WORLD'S 1st ALL ALUMINIUM construction, titanium connecting rods, electric power steering AND V6 VTEC.  It's MR (mid-engined RWD) configuration ensuring 50:50 weight distribution.  Adding value, the late Ayrton Senna lent a hand in Chassis rigidity Development and tuning the NSX.  THIS CAR's SO GOOD that it's on sale from 1990 to 2005 with minimal changes.

But only a handful (limited) units sold in Malaysia.  Finding 1 Excellent condition  is like finding a needle in a haystack.

That's why I said it's my Dream car.  All is not lost, A 1:18 100% accurate Die-cast model by AutoArt asking for RM650.  Saving money to buy the Replica.

That's all folks, thanks for having the time to read this blog entry.

PLEASE Be NICE to your SA when buying NEW CAR.

OR Else, thing's will NOT BE SMOOTH SAILING!

A Friend, Kelvin POST THIS in His Facebook Page...  I feel so touched that I'd like to blog it here:

"Sometimes I feel sorry for SA (Sales Adviser). Buyers always wanna squeeze the most free gift from SA. Using methods like "...  if u r not following the same offer I get from outside, I will change SA.  After change, only wanna start complaining stuff like my SA promise to deliver this and that, but ended up delay and all the bullshit".

I mean, come on, we are talking about buying something at a price tag of at least 40k . Give the SA their share and I am sure you will be a happy soon to be car owner.

Never be penny wise pound foolish (Ie. greedy). Anyone can promise you heaven and earth before sealing the deal. So if you are the type that survey the whole Malaysia just to get the slight extra discount (like 100-200 more), ALL THE BEST TO YOU!!!

NEXT TIME PLEASE Try putting yourselves in people's shoes."

END OF Kelvin's quote...

MY TURN:

My Observation:  The MORE Demanding, BOSSY, Mean customers to their Sales adviser, the More Problems/Defects follows.  The LAW of KARMA ironically true in 5/10 cases I handled.

Example of this DEMANDING, PERFECTIONIST Customer:

Buy No plate, BID Failed!  Their car came, minor defects...  Tinting done - ALSO DEFECTS...  Delivery, Alignment and balancing out...

Thing's not SMOOTH for Her...

In CONTRAST:

A patience DOCTOR Client who bought HIS Elantra with me.  Bought his Lucky no 4456 at 1st attempt, Waited patiently with no Complaint for another 10 days due to our Company trip, Admin off...  He's rewarded with a FRUGAL, Perfect Black Elantra.  I just visited him for Roadtax and insurance renewal.  1 year on, still SMOOTH SAILING and a HAPPY OWNER!

SO BE GOOD TO YOUR SALES EXECUTIVES or SALES ADVISERS and Good things will come to you!

Buying new Car from Branch OR Dealers better?

Are you looking to buy a New car?  Now, many people throwing me this Question:

IS it better to buy From < insert Brand... > Branch or Dealerships?

Well, let me run through the pros and cons and differences from buying with Branch and dealerships.
I am a Hyundai Salesman for a Dealer but I have a friend working in branch (Hyundai Sime Darby Motors).  So we often exchange information...

Here's what I gather...

BRANCH (Sime darby)

Pros:

- Quicker to get car allocations (most models)
- They do QC before delivery (Eg. Alignment and balancing, headlight levelling)
- PRIORITY  for defect claims
- HUGE discounts on "Passport" models only (At the moment it's Elantra and i10)
- Branch salesmen only Hyundai Roadshow at Motorshows, 1 Utama, Mid-valley, KLCC, The Curve
- 1st hand information on Production line (hence more accurate waiting lists)
- 1st to get NEW Trading terms.  Often 1 week earlier (headstart) than Dealers.
- Cars are Paid after SOLD.  So more Varieties/Colors in the Inventory.
- Got chance to do SPONSORED Roadshows (such as World Cup, Maybank Malaysian Open Golf)
 - Got chance to sell Pre-owned, Demo cars (SO TRUE for HYUNDAI SIME DARBY MALAYSIA)
 - FOR SALESPERSONS: Tied down with Legal Employment contract.

CONS:

- No previous year stock (all passed to dealers)
- less discounts (on other models)
- Less Commission
- Less margin
- Standardized Bonus, leave and Company annual trip/incentives.
- NEED TO WEAR Formal (Long sleeve and tie for guys, Long-sleeve blouse, scarf and skirts for girls) UNIFORM at duty.
- Higher pressure for Sales performance (especially 3S branches)
- LOTS OF POLITICS / Backstabbing / Group-think.
- YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.  Very little Teamwork, support from other Colleagues.
- TOO MANY SALESMEN (At least 15, up to 25)

DEALERS

Pros:

- ALL cars are PAID with Cash upfront before SOLD
- Therefore, to compensate (get back the cash), Better Discounts and freebies given
- Sometimes faster than branches if they keep OR force to take STOCK.  Eg. CBU Cars.
- Can offer to Submit Loan 1st, only pay Booking upon loan approval
- Can offer to Mark up for full loan
- Previous year (OR 2 years back stock - Kah Bintang) available.  So HUGE Discounts.
- For Salesmen, bigger commissions and margins and better Incentives (with passport models)
- ALSO for salesmen, more hands on Learning experience (ALL ROUNDER), more things to learn.  Cause everything Salesmen do.  Eg. Puspakom inspection, JPJ registration, collect AP from HQ.
- NO Politics,  LOTS OF TEAMWORK!  Cover 1 another, help one another.
- Less Hassle/formalities in Transactions VS Branches.  Eg. No need Wear tie and long sleeves.  Flexible Annual leave.  LESS FORMAL or NO EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT.
- Less salesmen.  Average 7 only.

CONS:

- No Pre-delivery QC
- Slightly more difficult for Defects claims.
- for Salesmen, Only "small scale" roadshow allowed.  As Major roadshows only Branches can do
- Lots of disappointments in Delivery date cause no access to Production line.
- Slightly higher mileage (for CBU cars)
- Sometimes slow selling cars HQ forced Dealer to take (in exchange with HOT Selling cars)
- Selling "While stock lasts".  "Sell what we have".
- Trading terms and promotions we were always 1 week behind Branches.

CONCLUSION: It's NOT Branch or dealers that matters.  It's SALESPERSON Services.  It's our JOB to guide you/ make you feel comfortable to buy your NEW Car.  Some salesmen I know DO Provide DOOR TO DOOR Service.  1 salesman (HYUNDAI ADVANT SPEED MOTORS) even do the FOLLOWING EXTRA MILES:

1)  Collect car from Client's house or office, drive to service centre and return to Client office.
2) Helped Client to renew Roadtax and insurance and Deliver to their Doorstep.
3) And many more...  Salesmen Extra miles service.

That's all folks, thanks for having the time and patience to read this blog entry.

Many things happened...

Many things happened to me...  I lost my IPAD 1 32GB Wifi 3G 2 days ago between 1pm to 2pm as I left it charging in my office.  Sad, I just upgraded to OS 5.1.1 and jailbroken 2 days before it's stolen (RM80 poorer).  Here's the photo:

My IPAD is Last seen in this casing: Orange Tunewear Tunefolio Synthetic leather.

Also, I need to work 6 days in a Row.  3 days Showroom duty (9am to 7pm) and 3 days Roadshow at Giant Kota Damansara (10am to 10pm NO SHIFT).  You are welcome to visit me this Sunday 11am to 10pm at Giant Kota Damansara Ground Floor.  Later after my showroom duty which ends 3.30pm, I shall head to Matrade for NST Cbt, Maybank Car of the Year showcase.

I started working in this New Job since 15 October 2012.  Learned a lot of stuff in the process.  Example: Besides commission from selling car, I can earn extra comission thru tinting, accessories like bodykits, insurance, loan and lastly trade-ins (from used car dealers).  Learn what to say and what not to say during roadshow and showroom duty, learned about the features of Hyundai cars.

So far still no sales.  Boss pressuring me for sales by end of this month.

There's a reason why I stopped covering my Sister's Myvi 1.5SE(A).  It's due to conflict of interest.  You see, I'm selling Hyundai i10 now.  I can't be seen heaping praises to its competitor, the MYVI.  But recent trip to KLIA as a back seat passenger, I found the MYVI's BUMPY and Unstable at speed above 110km/h.  On the way back, I witnessed a Black MYVI (1st gen) turned turtle.  How to write positively about this car?
I don't want to end this LONGTERMER on a sour note.  Hence, it's best not to comment/post.  Later I will just cover the FINAL Mileage that's all.

Lastly, thanks for your continuous support.  I shall keep this blog alive by hook or by Crook but less frequent...  Jeff Lim signing off...

Happy Easter/Good Friday everyone!

As per title.  To ALL CHRISTIANS...  Happy Easter and Good Friday everyone.

You might be wondering WHAT IS EASTER?

EASTER IS NOT ABOUT Bunnies, Chocolates and Easter eggs...  This is COMMERCIALIZED!!!

Here's the REAL MEANING of EASTER...

On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. It is typically the most well-attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches.

Christians believe, according to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. Through his death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Easter Season

In Western Christianity, Easter marks the end of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday. Eastern Orthodox churches observe Lent or Great Lent, during the 6 weeks or 40 days preceding Palm Sunday with fasting continuing during the Holy Week of Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox churches begins on Monday and Ash Wednesday is not observed.

Because of Easter's pagan origins, and also because of the commercialization of Easter, many Christian churches choose to refer to the holiday as Resurrection Day.

Easter in the Bible

The biblical account of Jesus' death on the cross, or crucifixion, his burial and his resurrection, or raising from the dead, can be found in the following passages of Scripture: Matthew 27:27-28:8; Mark 15:16-16:19; Luke 23:26-24:35; and John 19:16-20:30.

There are, in fact, as many misunderstandings about the calculation of Easter dates, as there are reasons for confusion. To clear up at least some of the confusion visit:
• Why Do the Dates for Easter Change Every Year?

Wednesday, February 29, 2012

Today, February 29 is a special day, like Olympics, It occurs once in 4 years.  Persons born or wedding today save lots of money as they celebrate ONCE in 4 years only.  Also, you will be super young.  Eg. you celebrate your 10th birthday but you are actually 40 years old.  How cool is that?

Best time to buy a NEW/USED car...

When is the right time to buy a new car? One might asked. To find out, read on.

Case example 1: A relative of mine learned the hard way. Her car was registered on End of November 1999. But when trade in time, it was deemed as 1999 model though ironically, it is only less than 6 weeks away from year 2000. It's like "so near yet so far" scenario.

Another case of registering a new car in the wrong time and losing out is like my current car. Why?

Case example 2: My Ford Telstar was registered in late January 1999. Technically, it should be a year 1999 car. But no! Ironically, it was manufactured in November 1998. What a big bummer... As a result, it's deemed 1998 model. How pathetic!!! Why this problem happened?

Due to KIASUNESS! Or afraid to lose. Apparently, the previous owner is KIASU, want to book and register a car before Chinese New Year just for the sake of "Showing off". Chinese New Year usually fall between Late January to Early February. Buying a car before Chinese New Year means taking delivery by late January. The consequence?

Unless it's a Perodua or a Hot selling car such as Toyota Vios which manufacturing and sales turnover are high, (Eg. stock turnover within 1 week); chances are previous year stock will roll on until February and sometimes up to 6 months plus from date of manufacturing to date of sale. In which it's typical for Imported cars such as FIAT, Imagine "NEW" 2004 stock of Fiat Coupe HAVEN'T CLEAR).

As a result, he/she often would ended up with a car manufactured A YEAR BEFORE!!! When it's time to sell the car, though it's registered in say February 2007, IT IS STILL MANUFACTURED in NOV 2006!!! It'll be deemed as 2006 model!!!

Therefore, according to my humble observation, the best time to buy a new car is between March to October. March because by then typically MOST CKD car manufacturer has cleared the previous year stock. Till October, why? Because buying a car in the month of November means losing out. As in case example 1 above, it's registered 1 month to the subsequent year (eg. 2007) and is deemed as 2006 model BUT ironically after owning for 31 days, it's 2007. Hence it is assumed that you've owned the car for 1 year though in reality, you only owned the car for 31 days!!! Think and ponder about it...

NOW let's shift your attention to used cars. The best time NOT to get a used car is 1 month before ANY FESTIVE SEASONS and after getting your bonus (End of December to mid January). Why?
Cause most used car dealers will jack up the price during that period. The rest of the time IS a GOOD time to buy a used car.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED time is:
1) RECESSION time! Strange but true, as Almost everyone will dispose their car DESPERATELY at bargain basement price. Same theory applies to buying a property, ALMOST everyone will sell their property at Riduculously LOW price out of desperation.

2) FOLLOWED by the month of December where most car owners desperate to get rid of their car before the value drop further.
3) Also, AFTER CHINESE NEW YEAR OR HARI RAYA. There are LOTS of KIASU jokers desperately getting RID of their "Old cars" for NEWER car(s). As a result, there would be oversupply of used cars as LOTS of people traded in or sold their cars.

Also, for Car dealers, the "CASH IN" or "PEAK season" period is over as the "URGE" of buying car(s) already DIMMED after Festive seasons. There would be OVERSUPPLY of USED cars as people "Dumping" their Old car(s) for NEWER car(s). Thus, A GREAT BARGAIN AWAITS!!!

Good luck to those Shopping for car(s), whether NEW or USED.
