KUALA LUMPUR: International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed has expressed optimism Proton's partnership with Suzuki would revive the national car maker's fortunes.

"Suzuki has wide experience in India where it dominates the compact car market," he told reporters after his keynote address at the 19th Malaysian Banking Summit on Thursday.

Proton, which has never done research and development on compact cars, could use Suzuki's expertise, he said, adding under the National Automotive Policy announced in January last year, it would be good for Proton to identify strategic foreign partners.

On Monday, Proton signed a memorandum of understanding and a licence agreement with Suzuki to form a long-term strategic partnership, with the possibility of developing a new compact car model.
The agreement would give Proton access to Suzuki's models, platforms, powertrain and automotive technology. - Bernama
