Perodua 2015 Performance Review – Sales Surpasses 200,000 Units

Article Sourced: Autoworld.com.my by Zachary Ho

Local automaker, Perodua, has achieved another milestone with over 213,300 vehicles sold in 2015 backed by the continued strong demand for its Axia, Myvi and Alza models.
“2015 was a very challenging year for us with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, the weakening Ringgit as well as the slump in oil prices having a big impact to the country’s economy,” Perodua President & CEO, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.
“Because of these challenges, many consumers have decided to ‘buy down’ to a more affordable alternative such as the Axia, which accounted for 99,700 units or 46.7% of Perodua’s entire sales for 2015,” Aminar added. He further said that Perodua was fortunate as its products and services which include Myvi, Alza and Axia, offer the best value for the money for its customers.
“Based on our estimation of the total industry volume of 667,000 in 2015, we believe that our market share is around 32% and we would like to maintain that level of 32% this year with a sales target of 216,000,” Aminar said. However, it looks like cumulative market share for the 2 local car brands will still be below 50% this year as they face stiff competition from the foreign marques. It may bode well for consumers who have more choices but it will be challenging for local automakers like Perodua to keep up.
Nevertheless, Aminar sees the demand momentum for Perodua models to grow this year, assisted by strong sales and marketing efforts as well as further improving its customer experience through all its sales and service network. As factors such as rising living costs and lower consumer sentiments are expected to be prevalent in 2016, Perodua is still in a good market position due to the affordability of its product range.
Based on Perodua’s internal estimates, the total industry volume for 2016 would grow slightly to 670,000 with new product launches taken into account.
“As a result of the higher sales in 2015, Perodua has also seen the largest production of vehicles in our history with 228,500 produced, an increase of 16.3% from 196,400 produced in 2014,” he said. “We are very thankful for all the support that Malaysians have shown us despite the challenging economic situation and we will strive to serve you better in all of our touch-points,” Aminar added.
With the strengthening US Dollar and Japanese Yen (which Perodua pays its purchase of components in), profit margins continue to be stressed. However, this is partly mitigated by buying forward in anticipation of the strengthening foreign currencies. As a result, Perodua is able to maintain the selling price for now. Its increase in local vendor purchases will also mitigate any foreign exchange risks as well as contribute to lower vendor production costs which in turn will benefit Perodua.
Additionally, with the completion of the new PGMSB manufacturing facility, where the bulk of funds were spent (2013-2015: RM 2.8 billion), Perodua forecasts lower capital expenditures of RM370 million in 2016, likely for maintenance and upgrades.
Aminar also shared with us Perodua’s intention to better its JD Powers Customer Satisfaction Index ranking of 9th spot by improving its sales and after-sales services. Perodua’s after-sales business has broken new records with 1.96 million intakes for 2015, an increase of 2.3% from 1.92 million in 2014. “The increase is mainly due to further upgrading of existing service facilities for the comfort of our customers,” Aminar said. As of December 2015, Perodua has 181 sales and 190 service centres nationwide.
Parts and accessories revenue has also created history with revenue sales of RM 248 million for 2015, a 2% increase over 2014’s RM 244 million. To attract more existing Perodua owners whose cars are out of warranty to return to Perodua for genuine parts, Perodua is planning to introduce special deals and budget options.
As such, they expect a higher intake this year with 2 million vehicles patronising its service centres nationwide, while revenue from parts and accessories is expected to grow by 5% to RM 260.2 million. In a further development, Aminar announced that Perodua is planning a retail outlet for pre-owned Perodua vehicles.
“While we are thankful and happy for the results in 2015, Perodua needs to focus on our next transformation phase in order to be ready for the stiffer competition and market liberalisation,” he added.
With that, Aminar announced a reshuffling of key management staff in an effort to boost efficiency. Some of the notable moves include:
  • Datuk Dr Nik Nazrul Thani as non-executive Chairman of Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd
  • Dr Zahari Husin as Managing Director of Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd
  • Mr Zainal Abidin Ahmad as Vice President of Perodua Auto Corporation Sdn Bhd
  • Datuk Ahmad Suhaimi Hashim as President of Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (PGMSB)
  • Mr T. Izutani as Vice President of PGMSB
  • Mr Rozunan Che Pa as Director of Manufacturing for Perodua Manufacturing Sdn Bhd and Perodua Engine Manufacturing Sdn Bhd,
  • Mr T. Kurinami as Executive Director of Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd

BMW F30 3 Series launched in Malaysia

SOURCE: CLICK ME!

BMW Group Malaysia has just launched its all-new sixth generation F30 3 Series, officially replacing the recently discontinued E90 model generation, which has accounted for nearly half of the company's total sales volume since its Malaysian introduction in 2006 - some 10,743 units finding Malaysian homes.

Three model variants have been introduced, namely the 320d, 328i, and 335i. As per usual BMW practice, the first batch of cars arrive fully imported before the start of CKD operations, which is when we expect the 320i to appear. As their badges suggest, the engine options of the all-new F30 3 Series mirror those on the F10 5 Series - they are all turbocharged and equipped with 8-speed automatic transmissions as standard.

The 320d and 328i get 2.0-litre four-cylinder powerplants whilst the 335i is powered by a 3.0-litre straight six. The diesel-powered 320d gets the highly-lauded N47 turbodiesel and boasts some pretty impressive numbers. Crank outputs of 184hp and 380Nm will shame many sports cars, yet rated fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100km will rival the best hybrids. Of course, do not expect to reproduce that figure if you regular put its 7.6-second century sprint claim to the test.

Main-seller of the F30 3 Series will likely be the 184hp/270Nm 320i, but since that variant is not available yet, options for petrol power start with the 328i, which gets the same N20 twin-scroll turbo engine tuned to higher outputs of 245hp and 350Nm. In the new 3 Series hierarchy, the 328i replaces the E90 325i, if you're among those who mourn the departure of the beloved N52 straight six, console yourself with a century sprint of 6.1 seconds and official rated consumption of 6.3 l/100km.

It's either that, or go all out for the range-topping 335i, where you do get the trademark BMW six-cylinder smoothness allied with the superlative punch of its twin-scroll turbocharger. The ballistic N55 engine shoves 306hp and 400Nm down its prop shaft, and in the compact frame of a 3 Series, that translates to 5.5 seconds zero-to-hundred, and a still decent 7.3 l/100km fuel consumption.

Recently introduced in the 5 Series and now featured in the 3 Series as well is the Driving Experience Control button, which allows drivers to select various driving modes including the Eco Pro setting which optimizes engine power delivery and operation of ancillaries to minimize fuel consumption. The system worked brilliant on the 528i M Sport which we tested recently, and we expect more of the same in the F30.

Being a vehicle of compact dimensions, the 3 Series does not get rear-wheel steering like the 5 and 7 Series, but it does continue BMW's migration to electric power steering for its mainstream models. The 335i features Variable Sport Steering, a speed-dependent system which varies steering ratio against steering angle. On a side note, it will be interesting to see if the new M3 will follow the M5's footsteps in using hydraulic steering instead.

Compared to the E90, BMW has expanded the F30's waistline a little. It measures 9.3cm longer from stem to stern, with the front and rear axles spaced 5cm further apart. Front and rear tracks have been increased by 37mm and 47mm, giving the car a larger and more stable footprint. BMW further claims that the frame's increased torsional rigidity and array of safety systems will make the F30 the safest 3 Series to date. Well, being the latest model, it should.

Inside, BMW has also taken care to improve the F30's cabin to give added levels of space and practicality over the E90. It may not be a big deal elsewhere, but BMW certainly saw it fit to point out that there are now two cup holders in front of the gear lever, and the door pocket will accommodate a 1-litre bottle. Rear passengers are now given an additional 15mm of leg room and 8mm of headroom over the E90.

Allowing further levels of personalization, the 328i and 335i are offered with the option of Sport Line and Luxury Line trims. Sport Line adds high-gloss black finish to the kidney grille, air inlets and tailpipe trim on the outside, and sports seats, a sports leather steering wheel with red contrast stitching, subtle red trim accents, seat details and a sports style instrument cluster design in the inside.
Above: Sport line, Below: Luxury line.

Meanwhile, takers of Luxury Line get the same exterior trim elements as Sport Line with the addition of high-gloss chrome finishing on the window frames. Inside, there is the option of selecting classic colours and further chrome accents as well as a wood trim catering to those with a taste for the classic and luxurious look and feel.

Like all contemporary BMW vehicles, the F30 comes with all of the latest innovations in information technology through BMW ConnectedDrive. The full range of driver assistance systems and mobility services include the BMW ConnectedDrive App, an interface system which integrates the cars Video Playback and iPod Plug-In functions allowing direct access to web radio, Facebook and Twitter directly through their on-board Control Display. The app is enabled in the 328i and 335i. In addition, the 335i also receives the revolutionary full colour BMW Head-Up Display (HUD) system.

The retail prices (on the road, without insurance, with BMW Service + Repair Inclusive (BS+RI)) for the new BMW 3 Series are:

· BMW 320d - RM 268,800
· BMW 328i - RM 309,800
· BMW 335i - RM 488,800

Honda gears up to rebound for 2012

The double whammy of having to deal with both earthquake in Japan and flooding in Thailand has made 2011 a year to forget for Honda. The latter tragedy, in particular, almost completely crippled Honda's plans this region, with Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd's plant in Malacca entering a period of enforced shutdown.

Being ranked highest in the J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2011 Malaysia's Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) study was a celebrated silver lining in what was a very dark cloud. In addition, owners of the City, CR-V, and Accord also gave favourable feedback in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey 2011, ensuring the three models finished top in their respective categories.

“In spite of some setbacks, we managed to sell 32,482 units and retained our No. 2 position in the non-national car segment. The difficult year did end on a bright note, with the introduction of a star - the Honda CR-Z (picture above), which brought excitement to the hybrid automotive segment. 2011 was also the first year that the hybrid market emerged, and the Honda Insight became the best selling hybrid model with sales of 4,568 units in 2011 that represented 54% share in the segment,” said Mr. Yoichiro Ueno, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia.

Commenting on Honda’s plans for 2012, Mr. Ueno said, “2012 will be a better year. It will be a year of recovery for Honda Malaysia as we rise stronger from the challenges of 2011. I am pleased to announce that our manufacturing plant in Malacca will resume production on 20 March 2012 and will fully recover 100% production by the end of April 2012 with a production of 180 cars per day. Our highest priority at this moment is to reduce the backorders and to work closely with our dealers to ensure prompt deliveries."

"On the day we suspended the production in October 2011, we had 2,900 backorder customers who were waiting for delivery. After our production was affected and we became unable to reply on the exact delivery timing, we still received a lot of additional orders and currently we have more than 5,000 backorder customers for CKD models. I would really like to thank those customers who understood the situation, accepted to wait for the delivery, and continuously gave support towards Honda through the challenging times,” Ueno added.

Looking ahead, the company forecasts that total industry volume (TIV) for 2012 will reach 618,000 units and it aims to capture 7.5% of this projected TIV. That target equates to sales of 46,500 units, an ambitious 31% growth from disaster-ridden 2011. The company currently has 1,000 orders for its newly launched CR-Z hybrid sports car, and has committed to significant investments with a new RM50 million warehouse having just opened in January and construction of a RM40 million pre-delivery inspection (PDI) centre under way.

CKD Volkswagen Passat Launched by Malaysian Prime Minister

Pekan, 11 March, 2012 – It is here at last – the locally assembled Volkswagen Passat was unveiled today by the Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak in the royal town of Pekan, Pahang, at the DRB-Hicom plant. This historical moment represents the first fruits of the collaboration between our local automotive conglomerate and the Volkswagen Group, which began with discussions that resulted in the auspicious signing ceremony held at the end of 2010.

Present at the unveiling were the top management of DRB-Hicom, including Dato' Syed Mohamad Syed Murtaza, Chairman of DRB-Hicom, Dato Sri Haji Mohd Khamil Jamil, Group Managing Director, DRB-Hicom, and top management from Volkswagen, Dr. Christof Spathelf, Senior Vice President, Group Manufacturing Overseas and Mr. Soh Wei Ming, member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen, and Head of Commercial Operations, China/Asean. Also present was Mr. Ricky Tay, Managing Director, Volkswagen Group Malaysia.

According to a follow up release, the Volkswagen Passat is priced at RM170, 888, and will be available for sale at all the 18 Volkswagen outlets nationwide. The release also stated that the Passat will have other variants, and the price will range from RM169,888 to RM184,888, according to specification and trim levels. We understand that some 300 units are already assembled, and ready for delivery.

According to Dato Sri Khamil, this collaboration with Volkswagen will eventually boost the production volume at the Pekan plant from its current 23,000 units a year to 50,000 units when the full complement of the planned local assembly is activated. Although at this time, Dato’ Sri Khamil did not specify what models are to be assembled, we do recall a year ago during the initial signing ceremony between DRB Hicom and Volkswagen that the Polo sedan and the Jetta are the planned models.

Immediately after the launch, some members of the media who attended the ceremony were given a first-hand taste of the locally assembled Passat in the form of a 300 kilometre drive from the Pekan plant to the Glenmarie golf and Country Club in Shah Alam. Having seen and driven the CBU Passat not too long ago, we found the locally assembled Passat to be just as good. The parts for these first 300 units come as a total package from the Volkswagen Group – there is a target of 40 percent local content, and according to Dr. Spathelf, the local content will be introduced in stages, and all local content parts must meet the quality standards of Volkswagen before they can be accepted.

The test of the local assembly would be in the fit and finish, the door gaps and trim integrity – our first impression of the test units, and there were twenty of them on the road today, is that the local units are indeed as good as the imported units.

Latest from Ayutthaya - Toyota's three factories shut down

October 19, 2011  By KON

SOURCE: CLICK ME

The situation at the flood-hit Thai region of Ayutthaya continues to worsen. Last week, we reported that Honda has halted operations of its plant there. Toyota, whose three plants are all situated away from Ayutthaya, is not directly affected.

Toyota Corolla Altis - one of many Thai-assembled Toyota models in Malaysia

However, according to a media statement released by UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd today, Toyota Motor Thailand Co. (TMT) has decided to halt operations at its three plants at Samrong, Gateway and Ban Pho due to shortage of parts from affected suppliers.

An extended shut down of these three plants will inevitably affect the Malaysian market as they supply majority of UMWT's fully-imported CBU models and CKD kits for its locally assembled models. At this moment, however, UMWT has stated that deliveries for October 2011 are not affected, although this will not continue if the flooding situation worsens.

“Our commitment to our customers remains topmost in our priority. We are closely monitoring on the parts supply situation in Thailand and will provide any updates or information in a timely manner. We sincerely hope for the quickest possible recovery and appreciate our customers and business partners understanding during these difficult times” said En. Ismet Suki, President of UMW Toyota Motor.

World COTY Winners Announced

World COTY Winners Announced

Having been narrowed down to the last three nominees of each category at the Geneva Motor Show last month, the 2011 winners of the World Car of the Year, World Performance Car, World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year awards were finally announced at the New York Auto Show yesterday.
Bagging the top prize of the 2011 World Car of the Year was the Nissan Leaf, beating the Audi A8 and BMW 5 Series to the gong. The Leaf’s win ends two years of domination by Volkswagen, who took home the prize in 2009 with the Golf, and in 2010 with the Polo.

The Leaf was also in the final reckoning but not winning the 2011 World Green Car award. That accolade went instead to the Chevrolet Volt, whose trophy cabinet already includes prizes such as Motor Trend 2011 Car of the Year, Green Car Journal 2011 Green Car of the Year, and Car and Driver 10 Best for 2011.
“The selection of the Volt as the World Green Car is a further proof point of the fuel efficient technologies that are now being offered by the Chevrolet brand around the world,” said Rick Schiedt, Vice President of Chevrolet Marketing.

“This award, and the others that have preceded it, validate the efforts of the development team to build a truly remarkable vehicle with the potential to transform transportation around the globe,” Schiedt added.
At the other end of the spectrum, the 2011 World Performance Car award goes to the Ferrari 458 Italia, which held off stiff competition from the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and Porsche 911 Turbo. Meanwhile, Aston Martin’s take on a 4-door sedan has found immediate fans with the Rapide winning the World Car Design of the Year award.
