LOS ANGELES (AP): Scotty McCreery won the American Idol battle of the fresh-faced country crooners Wednesday against Lauren Alaina.

A record 122 million-plus votes were received for the finale. "I never in my wildest dreams," said McCreery, a 17-year-old with a strikingly deep, old-soul voice that contrasts with his youth. "I've got to thank the Lord first ... he got me here."

McCreery and Alaina, 16, represent the first all-country finale and the youngest duo ever to compete on Idol, which is in its 10th season.

The exuberant, big-voiced Alaina performed on Tuesday's final sing-off despite a vocal cord injury that needed medical treatment. She received raves from the judges, who said she won the night.

But the consistently popular McCreery, who'd never been at risk of elimination, claimed the title and a record contract. The teenager seemed overwhelmed as he took the stage for a celebratory version of I Love You This Big, halting to embrace his parents in the audience, Alaina and others.

Then he playfully stuck his tongue out, trying to catch falling confetti. His victory continued a recent pattern: He's the fourth male in a row to win the Fox TV contest, with 2007's Jordin Sparks, 17, the last female Idol.
Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, two of the four female winners, have proved the winners with the most successful recording careers.

This season's vote total was more than three-quarters-of-a-billion, Seacrest announced Wednesday. For Fox, it's affirmation there's still life in the series that's had a long ratings reign as No. 1.

McCreery commented backstage Tuesday on the loyalty of country fans, and they clearly gave the show a boost. Last year, Fox didn't announce the number of votes for the much lower-key contest between winner Lee DeWyze and runner-up Crystal Bowersox.

In 2009, when winner Kris Allen and Adam Lambert duked it out in 2009, more than 100 million votes were cast.

The show also remains a hot promotional platform, with Seacrest helping some of the pop stars push either movies (Black's new Kung Fu Panda 2) or a Las Vegas show (Gladys Knight). Lady Gaga, whose new album Born this Way is out this week, was another performer.

The grandest bid for attention came from Broadway's troubled Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, with composers Bono and The Edge performing with the musical's star, Reeve Carney.

Other high-wattage stars who performed Wednesday at the Nokia Theatre included Beyonce and and Tony Bennett. McCreery and Tim McGraw sang Live Like You Were Dying, while Underwood returned to Idol to pair with Alaina on Before He Cheats.

Judge Jennifer Lopez - draped in a scanty outfit and shaking her famous booty - took the stage to dance while husband Marc Anthony sang, turning the night into a family affair.

On Tuesday, Alaina's tunes were Underwood's Flat on the Floor, Pam Tillis' Maybe It was Memphis and Like My Mother Does, an emotional tribute to her mother in the audience.

McCreery sang his future single, I Love You This Big, along with his version of Montgomery Gentry's Gone and George Strait's Check Yes or No.

"These kids are so young ... I just go, 'Wow.' They embody what this whole show is about," judge Randy Jackson said backstage Tuesday.

Last night, things on American Idol came down to teen country singer Scotty McCreery and teen country singer Lauren Alaina for the win.

The top 13 performed Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" and throughout the night, some of the lucky members were paired up with music royalty. James Durbin rocked out with Judas Priest (did you ever think you'd see metal on Idol?!), James Durbin sang up with gospel star Kurt Franklin and Gladys Knight, and Casey Abrams appropriately teamed up with Jack Black - and it was awesome!

The ladies of American Idol got together for "Single Ladies" and "Deja Vu", showing off many of them at their best - and then Beyonce herself came out to join them for "Crazy In Love". They also performed with TLC on "Waterfalls" after the duo sang "Scrubs" with some help from Lil Jon.

The men of American Idol got in on the action, singing a medley of everything from Prince to Elvis that had one thing in common - Tom Jones, who eventually joined them on stage for "It's Not Usual". Do the Carlton!

There were the usual video montages: Randy's most memorable quotes of the season, Steven's outrageous comments after performances, and Jennifer's reaction to the crushes of the male contestants. We also had foul mouthed rejectees, the Top 13 reflecting back on the season, and Scotty's and Lauren's trips back to their schools to donate some money to help the music programs there.

More celeb/Idol duets included Haley Reinhart with the one and only Tony Bennett, Scotty McCreery got to sing with one of his idols, Tim McGraw, and Lauren took to the stage with Idol winner Carrie Underwood.

Marc Anthony performed with a little help from his wife and Lady Gaga took over the stage later on in the night for "Edge of Glory". Beyonce also returned to show off her new song, "One By One". The Broadway show Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark performed with Bono and The Edge from U2. Yep, still don't wanna see it. Steven Tyler also got in on the action on stage and performed "Dream On".

After two hours and over 120 million votes, Seacrest names Scotty McCreery the winner of American Idol!

It was no surprise that Jacob Lusk was sent packing on “American Idol” Thursday night. He’s gone and we have a Top 4: Lauren Alaina, Scotty McCreery, Haley Reinhart and James Durbin. I have to say, I’m quite pleased with this season’s Top 4.




Pardon me while I sound like a broken record, but can someone tell me why oh why the Thursday results shows are an hour long? While this week’s episode wasn’t as painful as last week’s, it was still filled with too much filler and Fox pimping.



The opening number “Happy Together” sounded decent, but it was so long. The Hell’s Kitchen filler was pretty entertaining, but the Ford video was a snore. Lady Antebellum took the stage as “Idol” further embraces the country genre this season. Then there’s more filler.



Finally, Ryan starts with the results. James is up first and is sent to the far side of the stage. I knew immediately that he was going to do that two groups of two thing with the last person being safe and then asked to join the group they think is safe, which they never actually do. Pardon that run-on but there was no other way to express that thought.



Lauren is up next and she is sent to the opposite side of the stage. It was pretty obvious to me that she was going to be in the bottom, because there’s no way I thought James would be. America loved his tears Wednesday night.



Time for another performance. This time it’s Jennifer Lopez performing “On The Floor.” And it’s CLEARLY pre-recorded but they tried very hard to make us think it wasn’t. Even going as far as pretending Jennifer was off changing clothes after her performance. It sometimes make me wonder if they fake this, what else do they fake…



More results. Jacob is told to join Lauren. Even more obvious that’s the Bottom 2. Haley is sent to join James. Finally, Ryan tells Scotty he’s safe and tells him to join the group that is safe. Like every season, he refuses, so Ryan pulls him over to James and Haley’s group and tells them they’re all safe.



Ryan also points out (like I did last week) that Scotty was NOT in the Bottom 2 last week with Casey, meaning he’s never been in the bottom.



So it’s Lauren and Jacob in the Bottom 2 and Lauren is already crying. That girl needs to get a hold of her emotions and fears or she’s going home next week.



Jacob is eliminated and gets to sing one last time. For the first time this season, I enjoyed his performance. He actually seemed to have some personality at the end. Good for him.



I almost thought it was Lauren who was going home since Ryan earlier said the results might surprise us. I guess the surprise was that she was in the bottom instead of Haley. Speaking of Haley, she has really turned her position in this contest around. She very well might make the Top 3 and possibly the finale. That is unless Lauren’s fans were scared by her spot in the Bottom 2 and step up their voting next week.



Another question that comes up is where will Jacob’s votes go? Not to Scotty. Not to James. I guess they’d most likely go to Lauren. But even that seems weird. Next week is going to be very interesting. The ONLY thing that I’m 98 percent sure of is that Scotty will be fine next week and the week after, thus putting himself in the finale. But who is going to join him? James? Or is that too obvious. Lauren? Will her fans vote harder now? Or Haley? Has she finally convinced America to vote for her? This is so uncertain it’s actually kind of exciting.

AI 10: Casey Abrams proves too quirky for "American Idol"

NEW YORK (Reuters) – "American Idol" judges used their once-per-season save on Casey Abrams weeks ago, but fans of the hit talent show decided his time was finally up and eliminated him on Thursday during the show's Carole King week.

Host Ryan Seacrest teased at the top of the show that "a lot of fans are going to be disappointed" by the results, hinting that a popular finalist would go.

Abrams, 20, an unconventional but versatile musician who plays piano, guitar and upright bass, had not appeared in the bottom three since the judges trumped fan voting and decided to keep him in the running on March 24.

But the bearded California singer, who received less-than raves from the judges on Wednesday, got the boot after fans cast the fewest votes for his quirky twist on King's song "Hi-De-Ho."

Jacob Lusk, and 17 year-old country crooner Scotty McCreery were also among the last to hear their fate after Seacrest announced the results were being read out in random order.

Lusk has skated on thin ice several times, but McCreery has been a consistent favorite. Randy Jackson on Wednesday had praised his romantic rendition of "You've Got a Friend" as "flawless".

Abrams went out with a stirring performance of "I Put a Spell on You."
Seacrest paid tribute to the singer saying, "This is what talent looks like."

Thursday's show featured performances by last season's runner-up Crystal Bowersox, who sang "Ridin' With the Radio," and R&B singer Bruno Mars who did "The Lazy Song."

The five remaining finalists are rocker James Durbin, Lauren Alaina, Lusk, Haley Reinhart and McCreery.
"Idol," the nation's top-rated TV show, has recovered from several years of flagging ratings this season with new judges Jennifer Lopez and rocker Steven Tyler.

The finale airs on the Fox network May 24 and 25, when viewers will choose the next winner and he or she lands a recording contract.

Past winners such as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, as well as runners-up like Clay Aiken and Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, have gone on to successful careers on Broadway and in film.

American Idol eliminated Stefano Langone and determined its Top 6 tenth-season finalists during Thursday night's live results show broadcast on Fox.



Langone became the seventh finalist -- and second male finalist -- sent home from American Idol's  tenth season after he received the fewest home viewer votes following  Wednesday night's performance show, which featured the Top 7 finalists  performing songs from the 21st century.

"It started my career man and that's something that's -- You can't put a  price on that -- That's everything. So, I'm just so blessed. I came  this far, and it's great. It really is. It's great. So, I can't wait to  sing right now!" the 21-year-old from Kent, WA told Idol host Ryan Seacrest when asked how the show has changed his life. 



"This is the beginning of a new era in my life and I'm ready. I'm ready  for it. Words can't express how blessed I am to be here and to just be  alive and get to express myself through music. I mean, that's  unbelievable and I'm so thankful for that. You dream about this stuff  and you see it in the movies, and then to actually be a part of  something like this, that's a dream in itself and that's something that I  work for everyday," Langone added in a video montage that followed his  ouster. 

Prior to Langone's exit, Haley Reinhart, a 20-year-old from Wheeling, IL, and Jacob Lusk,  a 23-year-old from Compton, CA, were revealed by Seacrest to be the  other two members of this week's bottom three vote-getters. 

Langone -- whom the judges had initially selected as a "Wild Card" finalist -- had received very positive feedback from Idol judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson following his performance of Ne-Yo's "Closer" on Wednesday's show.  

"Yo, yo yo. Wow, Stefano, Stefano... Listen, I thought it was going to  be a little -- at first I thought, 'Look. He's going to come out, he's  going to do it, it's going to be a little jerky, a little kind of bad  karaoke,' but you know what? Dude, you turned me around. You know what?  You did a very good job," Jackson told Langone.

"You smoothed it out, and what I loved that you did in the first part of  the song was you took your time with the verses. That's what I always  want you to do. Jennifer And  I talk about this all the time. Take your time. We know you have the  power and you're going to slay it in the end with all the big huge  notes, but you took your time. I was really proud of you, and you kind  of worked the dance steps out a little bit too." 

"Stefano, nobody can say you weren't all up in it. I was hoping you'd dance and you did. Good job! Really good man," Tyler said.

"Speaking for the girls in the audience, I thought it was very, very  good. You really had your swag going on -- being the only girl on the  panel -- I really liked it. I really felt like you picked it up all  through here when you came around [our seats]," Lopez added. 

"It really felt like a concert. It felt good. It felt like a real  performance. If you own the song, it was more you than anything else. I  really, really liked it. I thought it was a really, really good job,  baby. Good job!"

In addition to Reinhart and Lusk, Casey Abrams, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, and Scotty McCreery also still remain in the running for American Idol's tenth-season title. 

Over 52 million home-viewer votes were cast following Wednesday night's performance show, according to Seacrest.

GOODBYE Pia Toscano, apparently HOT FAVOURITE (according to Article 1) got eliminated...  The MOST SHOCKING Exit since Chris Daughtry...

I Jeff Lim think: America is dumb... this girl is SO beautiful and every song i have heard from her is amazing... this is why I tried to Avoid watching this show (But Can't, addicted to it) because America is stupid and picks people who are Not so good singers. This girl will go far...I can't wait...she'll be just like Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry... Show the world that you don't have to be a winner on American idol to make it!!!  You have all the package, voice, looks, talents, personality to suceed...

I cannot believe she was voted off, the best voice this year, period. Just like Daughtry, he was the best, & he went on to prove it. You have the talent & voice, you will succeed without this title, I support Daughtry & I support you, it's the show's loss, not yours.  The judges used their save too early, save wasted on a "Ugly baboon".

Those of us who are shocked by Pia Toscano's elimination from "American Idol" and wondering if maybe our own love for her made us blind to some growing online social media movement against her, may take comfort in a chart released Thursday night immediately after Ryan Seacrest delivered the shocking news: Turns out, the Twitter chatters loved her too.

According yap.TV, a social media TV app for iPhone devices, which measured the quantity and sentiment of viewer response on Twitter during and in the 24 hours following Wednesday night's "Idol" in which Pia slayed the uptempo "River Deep, Mountain High," Pia was the subject of more Twitter commentary, much of it positive, than any other contestant. (Scotty McCreery came in second; Jacob Lusk, who was in this week's bottom three, third.)

What's more, adds yap.TV's Mark Lindsey, "Pia has had the most Twitter chatter this entire week, and clearly was thought to be the top pick."

For what it's worth, Pia's tweeting supporters are not giving up: At least one fan has started an online petition to bring her back. (Will celebrity Pia supporters like Tom Hanks and Snooki sign it?)

But Pia seems to have regained her equilibrium in the hours since her elimination, tweeting late last night: "I'm truly going to miss my idol family! Thank you @JLo Randy and Steven for believing in me. Love you and love my fans!"
