RON97 price dropped by 10 sen to RM2.80/L...

Effective 12am Today (Thursday) 16 June 2011...

For the first time since RON97 was put on a ‘controlled market float’ in July last year, the price of the higher octane fuel has been reduced by 10 sen from RM2.90 per liter to RM2.80 per liter. The last change was on the 5th of May, where it was hiked 20 sen. The ‘mainstream’ RON95 fuel remains at RM1.90 per liter, while both petroleum diesel and B5 biodiesel (currently only available in Putrajaya) are sold at RM1.80 per liter.

Women drivers to circle Saudi embassy in protest

WASHINGTON: An unusual protest is planned for Washington as women plan to drive around the Saudi embassy to protest the kingdom's ban on female drivers.

The Institute for Gulf Affairs, which is sponsoring Wednesday's rally, accuses Saudi Arabia of practicing a system of gender apartheid that oppresses women - most noticeably by refusing to allow women behind the wheel.

The protest will run from noon to 4 p.m. outside the embassy in Washington. It is designed to support a protest planned for Friday inside the kingdom itself.

Senior Saudi clerics have issued fatwas, or religious edicts, banning women from driving, claiming it protects against the spread of vice and temptation because women drivers would be free to leave home alone and interact with male strangers.

Top 10 parts wear and tear parts likely to fail

According to British specialist insurer Warranty Direct, its study shows that around one in three repairs to vehicles aged between three and seven-years old will be due to a wear-related failure.

Manufacturer new car warranties only cover material or manufacturing defects because wear-related failures increase in frequency as a vehicle ages and moves outside the traditional three-year cover period.

The Warranty Direct data shows that even small parts which will wear out over time – like the bearings in a water pump – could set you back an average of £209 (RM1,045) to fix. Meanwhile, larger components like gearboxes cost on average £1,378.65 (around RM7,000)  to put right.

table-(1).jpg
“The statistics highlight the importance of checking the small print on longer term new car warranties and after-market policies,” says Duncan McClure Fisher of Warranty Direct. “Those with ‘wear and tear’ exclusions mean the consumer is left to foot the bill for worn out parts.”
Motorists are also advised to verify the level of cover throughout the duration of the advertised warranty period as the cover level may deteriorate as the car ages.

McClure Fisher adds: “It’s not reasonable to expect manufacturer warranties to cover parts that wear out but, on the flip side, motorists are not necessarily aware that, as their car gets older and wear-related failures become more frequent, they won’t necessarily be covered unless they have a policy that covers wear."

Motorists to bear cost of testing vehicles

The Star, Wednesday, June 15, 2011

khoo2-(1).jpg PETALING JAYA: Car owners, not car dealers, will bear the costs of Puspakom’s Transfer of Ownership (B5) and Hire-Purchase (B7) inspections, the Federation of Motor and Credit Companies Associations of Malaysia (FMCCAM) said.

Secretary-general Khoo Kah Jin said motorists wanting to sell theirvehicles to used car dealers have to pay for the B5 and B7 inspections first.

“We will evaluate the car according to Puspakom’s inspection results,” he told The Star yesterday.

However, he said the federation remained totally against the B7 inspection costing RM60 which is to be enforced from today, deeming it “an unnecessary cost.”

“The four-point B5 inspection is sufficient to test a vehicle’s roadworthiness. Sellers can always go to a trusted mechanic for additional free professional advice,” he said.

On Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s statement last week that used motorcycles would be exempted from the B7 test due to the small number involved, Khoo questioned why this was the case if safety was the main issue.

Meanwhile, FMCCAM and Gerakan Youth will submit a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Department and the ministry today requesting to delay the implementation of the B7 inspection.

According to the amended Hire-Purchase Act, motorists wanting to sell their vehicles need to send the cars for a comprehensive 18-point inspection by Puspakom before entering into a hire-purchase agreement.

The inspection will include computerised testing for smoke emission, brakes, side-slip and suspension.

Foreign vehicles to be barred from filling up on RON95 petrol and NGV

 Tuesday, June 14, 2011 9:05 PM

KUALA LUMPUR: RON95 petrol and NGV fuel will be banned from being sold to owners of foreign-registered vehicles from tomorrow, the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism announced Tuesday.

RON95 petrol would however be allowed to be sold to those having foreign-registered motorcycles as an exception.

Following the move, the requirement to produce Mykad by Malaysians using foreign-registered vehicles for buying RON95 petrol at all petrol stations throughout the country had been withdrawn, the ministry said in a statement here.

On Aug 1 last year, a directive to ban sales of RON95 petrol to foreign-registered vehicles nationwide was imposed with the exception given to Malaysians who could produce the Mykad for verification.

The ministry in the statement clarified that the government had received feedback of leakages due to abuse of of the Mykad for purchasing RON95 petrol.

According to the ministry, petrol station operators at border areas had also complained of difficulties in controlling and ensuring the directive on the petrol ban was fully complied with.

"On this issue, the government is of the view that the ban on all foreign-registered vehicles from buying RON95 petrol and the withdrawal of the condition that allowed purchase of RON95 petrol on producing the Mykad throughout the country with the exception of motorcycles, is reasonable," the ministry said.

The ministry clarified that the ban also covered NGV fuel following the discovery that 311,000 litres of NGV fuel were sold to foreign registered vehicles each year.

"At the rate of the current subsidy, the NGV fuel subsidy enjoyed by foreigners amounted to RM360,000 each year," the statement added.

Used car dealers protest against new inspection requirement

Used car dealers protest against new inspection requirement

KUALA LUMPUR: Frustrated used car dealers nationwide are protesting against the 18-point inspection requirement that was included in the amendments to the Hire-Purchase Act 1967.

Effective June 15, all used vehicles for sale will need to undergo Puspakom's 18-point inspection (B7).

Federation of Motor and Credit Companies Associations of Malaysia (FMCCAM) secretary-general Khoo Kah Jin said the B7 would incur unnecessary costs for consumers.

He said Puspakom's current four-point inspection (B5) - on the chassis number, engine number, windows and windscreens as well as cut-and-join parts - was sufficient.

"The B7 inspection is unnecessary as the additional 14-point inspection will be based on visual checks which are unreliable," he told reporters during a protest by the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Car Dealers and Credit Companies Association here Tuesday.

Khoo said the new rule would only benefit Puspakom as customers would have to pay an additional RM90 for the B7 inspection on top of the original RM30 for B5.

Another issue of contention was the 1% maximum booking fee mandated by the amendments, which requires used car dealers to refund customers 90% of the booking fee if the deal fell through.

"If we collect RM100 for a RM10,000 car, we will only get to keep RM10 if the customer pulls out at the last minute. This is very unfair," he said.

Biodiesel goes on sale + Videos

The Star: Thursday, June 02, 2011

PUTRAJAYA: Biodiesel is now available in the market.

From this month until October, the supply of the new fuel will be available in stages starting at Putrajaya followed by Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor respectively.

Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Tan Sri Bernard Dompok launched the B5 biodiesel programme at the Petronas station at Precint 9 here on Wednesday.

With this, all five Petronas stations and one Shell station here will be dispensing the fuel.

Dompok fuelling up a BMW X3 xDrive20d with a full tank of B5 biodiesel during its launch in Putrajaya on Wednesday. Also present were representatives from BMW and Petronas.

B5 is a blend of 95% regular petroleum-based diesel and 5% biodiesel which can be used in normal diesel engine vehicles without any modifications. It will be sold at the same price as regular diesel at RM1.80 per litre.

Dompok said that the B5 price mechanism would be regulated and determined by the Finance Ministry.

“The rolling out of the B5 programme will not cause any price changes as the Government will continue providing subsidies to ensure that the B5 will be at the same cost as regular diesel,” he said.

“The production of the B5 is more expensive but the cost is absorbed by the Government,” he added.

Malaysian Palm Oil Board director general Datuk Dr Choo Yuen May said the fuel is more environment-friendly compared to regular diesel.

BMW, a strong diesel advocate, said it supported the government initiative.  BMW Group Malaysia currently has an Advanced Diesel variant vehicle here in Malaysia for almost every BMW model introduced in the country.

It said modern diesel engines generate 20% more horsepower, 75% more torque and consume up to 30% less fuel compared to their petrol equivalents. They also produce up to 25% less carbon dioxide (CO2) than their equivalent petrol counterparts.

The next step forward for Malaysia is to go ahead as planned to introduce Euro 4M standard diesel this year, it said.

"Such a move would ultimately be most beneficial to consumers as well as the environment, who would obtain better performance while lowering fuel consumption and emission levels at the same time," it said in a statement.

"This would ultimately ensure the further takeup of green technology that is sustainable for both the nation and the environment in the long-run."

Team Lotus cleared to race under current name

LONDON: Britain's High Court has cleared Team Lotus to continue racing in Formula One under its current name, following a dispute with a rival team.

The fight over the Lotus name in F1 went to trial in March.

Team Lotus used it last season, claiming it legally acquired the rights from the remnants of the former team. Group Lotus, the company's road-car division, also claimed the rights and is a major backer of Renault's F1 team.

The court ruled Friday that Team Lotus is the rightful owner of the name and can continue to use the iconic badge.

Group Lotus can use the Lotus name on its F1 car and use the black and gold colours, but can only display the badge on its road cars.

LOS ANGELES (AP): Scotty McCreery won the American Idol battle of the fresh-faced country crooners Wednesday against Lauren Alaina.

A record 122 million-plus votes were received for the finale. "I never in my wildest dreams," said McCreery, a 17-year-old with a strikingly deep, old-soul voice that contrasts with his youth. "I've got to thank the Lord first ... he got me here."

McCreery and Alaina, 16, represent the first all-country finale and the youngest duo ever to compete on Idol, which is in its 10th season.

The exuberant, big-voiced Alaina performed on Tuesday's final sing-off despite a vocal cord injury that needed medical treatment. She received raves from the judges, who said she won the night.

But the consistently popular McCreery, who'd never been at risk of elimination, claimed the title and a record contract. The teenager seemed overwhelmed as he took the stage for a celebratory version of I Love You This Big, halting to embrace his parents in the audience, Alaina and others.

Then he playfully stuck his tongue out, trying to catch falling confetti. His victory continued a recent pattern: He's the fourth male in a row to win the Fox TV contest, with 2007's Jordin Sparks, 17, the last female Idol.
Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, two of the four female winners, have proved the winners with the most successful recording careers.

This season's vote total was more than three-quarters-of-a-billion, Seacrest announced Wednesday. For Fox, it's affirmation there's still life in the series that's had a long ratings reign as No. 1.

McCreery commented backstage Tuesday on the loyalty of country fans, and they clearly gave the show a boost. Last year, Fox didn't announce the number of votes for the much lower-key contest between winner Lee DeWyze and runner-up Crystal Bowersox.

In 2009, when winner Kris Allen and Adam Lambert duked it out in 2009, more than 100 million votes were cast.

The show also remains a hot promotional platform, with Seacrest helping some of the pop stars push either movies (Black's new Kung Fu Panda 2) or a Las Vegas show (Gladys Knight). Lady Gaga, whose new album Born this Way is out this week, was another performer.

The grandest bid for attention came from Broadway's troubled Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, with composers Bono and The Edge performing with the musical's star, Reeve Carney.

Other high-wattage stars who performed Wednesday at the Nokia Theatre included Beyonce and and Tony Bennett. McCreery and Tim McGraw sang Live Like You Were Dying, while Underwood returned to Idol to pair with Alaina on Before He Cheats.

Judge Jennifer Lopez - draped in a scanty outfit and shaking her famous booty - took the stage to dance while husband Marc Anthony sang, turning the night into a family affair.

On Tuesday, Alaina's tunes were Underwood's Flat on the Floor, Pam Tillis' Maybe It was Memphis and Like My Mother Does, an emotional tribute to her mother in the audience.

McCreery sang his future single, I Love You This Big, along with his version of Montgomery Gentry's Gone and George Strait's Check Yes or No.

"These kids are so young ... I just go, 'Wow.' They embody what this whole show is about," judge Randy Jackson said backstage Tuesday.

American Idol Season 10: Finale Recap

(SOURCE: Click the title)

Posted on 05/26/2011 by Gina in American Idol

by Gina Scarpa

Last night, things on American Idol came down to teen country singer Scotty McCreery and teen country singer Lauren Alaina for the win.

The top 13 performed Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" and throughout the night, some of the lucky members were paired up with music royalty. James Durbin rocked out with Judas Priest (did you ever think you'd see metal on Idol?!), James Durbin sang up with gospel star Kurt Franklin and Gladys Knight, and Casey Abrams appropriately teamed up with Jack Black - and it was awesome!

The ladies of American Idol got together for "Single Ladies" and "Deja Vu", showing off many of them at their best - and then Beyonce herself came out to join them for "Crazy In Love". They also performed with TLC on "Waterfalls" after the duo sang "Scrubs" with some help from Lil Jon.

The men of American Idol got in on the action, singing a medley of everything from Prince to Elvis that had one thing in common - Tom Jones, who eventually joined them on stage for "It's Not Usual". Do the Carlton!

There were the usual video montages: Randy's most memorable quotes of the season, Steven's outrageous comments after performances, and Jennifer's reaction to the crushes of the male contestants. We also had foul mouthed rejectees, the Top 13 reflecting back on the season, and Scotty's and Lauren's trips back to their schools to donate some money to help the music programs there.

More celeb/Idol duets included Haley Reinhart with the one and only Tony Bennett, Scotty McCreery got to sing with one of his idols, Tim McGraw, and Lauren took to the stage with Idol winner Carrie Underwood.

Marc Anthony performed with a little help from his wife and Lady Gaga took over the stage later on in the night for "Edge of Glory". Beyonce also returned to show off her new song, "One By One". The Broadway show Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark performed with Bono and The Edge from U2. Yep, still don't wanna see it. Steven Tyler also got in on the action on stage and performed "Dream On".

After two hours and over 120 million votes, Seacrest names Scotty McCreery the winner of American Idol!
